Further Information
The Astroviridae family includes single-stranded, non-enveloped, positive-sense RNA viruses with a typical diameter of 28-30 nm. Several studies suggest that Astroviruses are the second most common cause of gastroenteritis in children after Rotavirus infection. Astroviruses were first identified in 1975 by electron microscopy (EM) in children with diarrhea.
Gastroenteritis is an inflammation of the stomach lining and small and large intestine. In most cases it is infective. Symptoms include anorexia, nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, and abdominal pain or discomfort.
Molecular assays based on Real-Time PCR technology are suitable for the identification of this family of pathogens, thanks to their rapid response times, high sensitivity and specificity and being now a routine tool in diagnostic laboratories.
