Further Information
Streptococci are aerobic, Gram-positive microorganisms with a DNA genome that cause many ailments, including pharyngitis, pneumonia, skin infections, sepsis, and endocarditis.
The current classification of streptococci is based on the presence of carbohydrates in the cell wall and distinguishes them into 20 groups (from A to H and from K to V), called Lancefield groups. Viridant streptococci form a separate group that is difficult to classify.
The most significant pathogenic streptococcus is Streptococcus pyogenes, which is beta-hemolytic and therefore belongs to Lancefield group A.
The most frequent acute symptoms of group A beta-hemolytic streptococcus are pharyngitis and skin infections.
In some cases, more than two weeks after infection, late non-suppurative complications (rheumatic fever, acute glomerulonephritis) occur. Furthermore, group A beta-hemolytic streptococcus can spread through the affected tissues and along the lymphatic vessels (causing lymphangitis) to regional lymph nodes (causing lymphadenopathy) and in this case can also cause local suppurative complications, such as peritonsillar abscess, otitis media, sinusitis and bacteremia. Suppuration depends on the severity of the infection and the predisposition of the tissue. Other serious symptoms include septicemia, puerperal sepsis, endocarditis, pneumonia and empyema.
