Further Information
Streptococcus agalactiae, commonly called group B strep (GBS), remains the most common bacterial cause of meningitis among infants younger than 90 days.
Listeria monocytogenes is a facultative intracellular gram-positive bacterium responsible for listeriosis, a fatal disease with symptoms of miscarriage, stillbirth, septicemia and meningitis. L. monocytogenes infection during pregnancy is associated with miscarriage, preterm delivery, and neonatal complications, including sepsis and meningitis.
Escherichia coli is a gram-negative bacillus residing in the normal intestinal microbiota. However, some strains of E. coli can cause disease in humans. The extraintestinal pathogen E. coli remains one of the most common bacterial pathogens causing extraintestinal infections, including neonatal meningitis, septicemia, and urinary tract infections.
