Further Information
Norovirus (NoV) belongs to the Caliciviridae family and is considered the leading cause of non-bacterial acute gastroenteritis (AGE) in all age groups worldwide.
The NoV genome consists of single-stranded, positive-sense RNA with 3 open reading frames (ORFs 1-3). Based on phylogenetic analysis, human NoVs are classified into ten genogroups, from GI to GX. Noroviruses commonly isolated in cases of acute gastroenteritis belong to two genogroups: genogroup I (GI) and genogroup II (GII).
Endemic NoV gastroenteritis typically affects children under 5 years of age. Human-to-human transmission of NoV is common, primarily via the faecal-oral route; however, the spread can be promoted by vomiting1. Furthermore, Noroviruses are spread indirectly through contaminated food and water. They are highly contagious and around twenty viral particles can cause an infection.
Most Real-time RT-PCR assays for Norovirus GI and GII target the RNA polymerase-capsid junction (ORF1-ORF2 junction), which is the most highly conserved region of the Norovirus genome.
