Further Information
Adenoviruses, Metapneumoviruses and Bocaviruses are viral pathogens that mainly cause respiratory tract infections.
Adenoviruses (AdV) belong to the Adenoviridae family and are double-stranded DNA viruses. Transmission can occur by close direct contact, by inhalation of infected aerosol or by the fecal-oral route. Adenoviruses cause a variety of diseases in humans, including upper respiratory symptoms, fever, pneumonia, gastroenteritis, and conjunctivitis. Symptoms associated with upper respiratory tract infections are cold, cough, fever, pharyngitis, pneumonia and bronchitis. Rare manifestations of AdV infections include hemorrhagic cystitis, hepatitis, hemorrhagic colitis, pancreatitis, nephritis, or encephalitis. Adenovirus infections are more common in young children due to a lack of humoral immunity. The disease is more severe and spread is more likely in patients with compromised immunity (eg, organ transplant recipients, human immunodeficiency virus infection, congenital immunodeficiency syndromes).
Human Metapneumovirus (hMPV) belongs to the Paramyxoviridae family and has a single-stranded RNA genome. Typical symptoms caused by hMPV include acute upper respiratory tract infections which can be mild and circumstantial or more severe, causing shortness of breath and pneumonia. hMPV is a frequent cause of bronchiolitis in young children. Cough, rhinorrhea, shortness of breath, and fever are commonly reported symptoms in children infected with hMPV.
Human bocavirus (HBoV) is a small, non-enveloped DNA virus belonging to the Bocaparvovirus genus of the Parvoviridae family.
