Further Information
Pneumocystis jirovecii (PCP) is an opportunistic fungal pathogen that does not cause any disease in immunocompetent patients. However, it can cause severe pneumonia in immunocompromised hosts: risk factors for PCP pneumonia include HIV, organ transplantation, malignancy, certain inflammatory or rheumatologic conditions, therapies, and associated conditions that cause health impairment. The cystic form of pneumocystis is spread through the air from person to person.
The signs and symptoms of PCP are nonspecific and can easily be confused with other bacterial or viral infections. Symptoms include progressive dyspnea, low-grade fever, nonproductive cough, hypoxemia, and widespread dry rales on examination. Definitive diagnosis, therefore, requires direct detection of the organism in lower respiratory secretions or tissue.
