Further Information
Rotaviruses (RVs), belonging to the Rotavirus genus of the Reoviridae family, have been recognized as a major cause of acute, often severe, gastroenteritis in infants and young children and are still associated with high infant mortality in low-income countries.
The Rotavirus A genome consists of 11 double-stranded RNA (dsRNA) segments encoding six viral structural proteins (VP1 to VP4, VP6 and VP7) and six nonstructural proteins (NSP1 to NSP6). Based on the VP6 antigens, Rotaviruses can be divided into 7 distinct groups (A-G).
Rotavirus serogroups A-C are pathogenic to humans, although Rotavirus A causes more than 90% of infections. The main route of transmission is the faecal-oral route, due to contamination of food, water or objects. Typical symptoms are vomiting, watery diarrhea and abdominal pain.
Diagnosis of rotavirus gastroenteritis can be by immunoassays or polymerase chain reaction (PCR) tests.
