Further Information

The Cytomegalovirus (CMV) is a virus belonging to the Herpesviridae family. It is a ubiquitous virus that infects several animal species as well as humans it is highly species-specific.
The spread of infection in the population has always been consistently high (40-100%), while the number and variety of symptomatologically evident infections have increased greatly in recent years, as a consequence of the increase in immunocompromised or immunologically immature subjects (immaturity of newborn, organ transplants, malignant tumors, splenectomy, transfusions, HIV infections, advanced age). In healthy subjects CMV infection is generally asymptomatic.
The virus replicates in various organs such as the lungs, liver, kidneys, gastro-intestinal tract and is eliminated continuously through saliva, maternal milk, spermatic fluids, urine, cervical and vaginal secretions, tears, faeces and blood.
