Further Information
Toxoplasma gondii is a pathogen that infects the central nervous system. T. gondii infects approximately one-third of the world population, making it one of the most widespread parasitic organisms.
Cats and other felidae serve as the definite host producing oocysts, an environmentally resistant life cycle stage found in the feces of these animals. Transmission occurs predominantly via ingestion of tissue cysts, ingestion of oocysts from contaminated food or water, or congenital transmission.
Infection during pregnancy can result in congenital infection with severe neurological sequel for the new-born.
In immunocompromised individuals, reactivation of latent neurological foci can result in encephalitis. Immunocompetent individuals infected with T. gondii maintain the infection for life, but are typically asymptomatic. Recent studies, however, have suggested that these presumed asymptomatic infections may actually affect behaviour and other physiological processes.
