The Herpes simplex viruses (HSV) belong to the Herpesviridae family, DNA viruses able to replicate in the nucleus of epithelial cells from which they free themselves to infect contiguous cells. Humans are the only natural host of HSV.
Based on the clinical course of the infections, 2 immunological variants are distinguished, HSV type-1 and type 2.
HSV 1 is responsible for recurrent perilabial herpetic lesions and in general for skin infections of the supraumbilical region and, albeit less frequently, for genital infections.
HSV 2 is responsible for primary or recurrent infections located in the male and female genital tract.
Both viruses can find themselves in the form of active replication or in a latent phase which, following stimuli of various kinds, can give rise to viral reactivation causing a recurrence or the asymptomatic elimination of viral particles. The reactivation of HSV then has particular significance in certain circumstances, such as acquired immunodeficiency virus infection, therapeutic immunosuppression for organ transplants or following antineoplastic treatments. The spread of the virus through the bloodstream also often occurs in newborns, who contract the infection during delivery, with consequent disseminated pathology and risk of complications related to central nervous system infection.
